Hey readers,
Welcome back to Tuesday's Takeaways!
This week the Top Quotes' theme is lies!
  • Takeaway trivia of the week: Do you know what aspect of a liar's eyes will give them away?
"Heaven is hopeless
And hidden from view
And I don’t know
How to help it
Because I’ve been a sinner
For as long as I’ve known
That lying
Tastes good on the tongue"
-Kate Podias

"Purple prose flees my fingers but it is only running away from the white whispers in my head.
The lies of my dreams, the exodus of rationality"
-Mic Braun, Purple Prose

"I don’t believe a single phrase that falls from those beautiful lips."
-Tonsor Mal, Be Patient

"My forked tongue slips between my teeth to turn a calculated cacophony into honey along my berry-boisterous lips
. . .
My forked tongue spits into my mirrored face as I whisper with false sincerity,
That I am the most luminous star
I know I am a soiled girl."
-Samantha Paucar, Nice Enough Girl and Her Cheap Tears

And now...
It's their pupils! It's a widespread belief is that liars have shifty eyes, but that's actually not true. When a person is lying their pupils will dilate!

Next week's theme is going to be about flowers.
Make sure to stay tuned! <3

Hey readers,
Welcome back to Tuesday's Takeaways!
This week our Top Quotes are about the fluttering beauties we call butterflies... both in our stomachs and in nature!
  • Takeaway trivia this week: Do caterpillars lose their memories when they undergo metamorphosis?
In the meantime let's get to our favorite quotes!
 "I look to the sunrise
Only to find myself
Wrapped in a cocoon of worry"
-Kathleen Conlon, Vampires at Dawn

"but you, still cocooned in your hopes
are shielded from failure knocking at your door,
mocking kisses from the gods"
-Mic Braun, seasonal kisses

"Did you know, most butterflies can only live for two weeks?
When I found this out, it all began to make sense
because I often found myself throwing up dead ones."
-Izaura Danilova, Sorry if my forever isn't what you thought it would be.

"they say a chrysalis is simply a mess of muck, the collapse of a life in the pause before a butterfly"
-Sarah Einav, A Lesson in Resilience

"so your toes grow petals,
and your legs are stalks,
and butterflies and ladybugs go free
from the earth of your chest"
-Joshua Avin, My Dad and Modest Mouse

"You gave me butterflies when you came into my life, and when you left I felt them die and now they’re sitting here, giving me this sickening feeling I never signed up for"
-Emily Shrem, goodbye for now

"Her bosom opens cages to let her soul fly.
She was a caterpillar trapped in a cocoon,
Until she broke free of her insecurities. "
-Sammie King, SHE IS IMAGO DEI
Can you relate to any of these? Do you get butterflies reading these quotes? Let us know in the comments!
And now...
Although some caterpillars convert their entire body into a sort of gooey substance when undergoing transformation, researchers at Georgetown University proved that moths can retain at least some of the memories they had when they were caterpillars, meaning that the neurons that store their memories survive the enzyme digestive process that converts the rest of their body. Interestingly enough, this was only possible when the caterpillars were trained close to the time of their metamorphosis.

Next week's theme is going to be about lies.
Make sure to stay tuned! <3

Hey readers,
Welcome back to Tuesday's Takeaways!
This week our Top Quotes are centered around colors!
  • Takeaway Trivia of the week: Did you know that there is an entire branch of psychology dedicated to understanding how colors make us feel? Can you guess which color is calming and intellectually stimulating?
We've had a lot of submissions with colors in them, so it was hard to narrow it down to just 5!
That being said, here are our Top 5 Quotes on colors:
"We can all heal
And bloom like a red carnation"
-Bloom Yuki, Heal

"Blue is the turbulent crashing sea of Moby Dick, and the placid, pale waters of
a babbling brook
Blue is Picasso’s grief
Blue is weakness
Blue is strength
Blue beckons man into the infinite"
-Alana Silberg, Infinite Blue

"A girl looks up
Green eyes framed by lilac
A girl looks up
Blue eyes framed by cedar"
-Teresa Wrobleski, August 17th

"This all started because you looked at
me with that stupid smile.
That pearly white smile on that beautifully mocha face"
-Miles Mercer, 3:14 AM

"In the black hole of your smile
Dark matter of your spirit
Spiraling hug of your light"
-Gregory Santiago, In the Scent of Dusty Libraries
And now...
It's the color blue! Studies have also shown that blue is associated with loyalty and safety. Does blue have these connotations for you?

Did you relate to any of our Top 5 Quotes?
Let us know in the comments!

Next week's theme is going to be about metamorphosis.

stuck in spring

Hey readers,
Welcome back to Tuesday's Takeaways!
As the weather gets warmer and we reach official spring season, we decided to form our favorite Top Quotes into a letter acknowledging Spring!
  • Takeaway Trivia this week: Is Spring Fever real? (We are certainly starting to feel it!) And what silly myth regarding the spring equinox has been proven false?
A LETTER TO SPRING:
This is what you are to me:

"The site of rain and sun and tranquility."
-Allina Khan, STORM OF THE MASSES

I'm eagerly awaiting for you to re-enter into my life soon. When you do,
"Bring me sunshine.
Bring me your withered petals,
Bring me your blooming daisies."

-Samantha Merzel, UNCONDITIONAL LOVE

Because-
"Being with you simply made me happy,"

-Emily Shrem, GOODBYE FOR NOW

"Like when I tasted hope for the first time [and]
It came in the form of sunshine."

-Jada Gordon, All I Know Has Been Rewritten

Since you have last been here:
"I’ve discovered a place...
Where the fragrant breeze wafts in,
Lavender, Honey, Lilacs
The warmest of springs."

-Melissa Louis, A Warm Winter

And even though winter seems long, I know that:
"...at the end
A glistening amount of sunshine
A rainbow full of glorious colors shines
On my face
On the world"

-Diana Ariel Harman, THE PERFECT STORM

Are you awaiting spring just as much as us? Comment below to let us know!
And now...
"Spring fever" is a term referring to both psychological and physiological symptoms that show up in accordance with the arrival of Spring. One of the reasons scientists believe it is a real condition is due to increased light, more exercise and more bare skin in these months influencing hormone levels. The exact cause remains unclear, so for now it's as real as you make it!

As for the myth:
It was thought that balancing an egg on its end is possible on the spring equinox. The truth is, aiming to balance an oval-shaped object on its end (especially one that can easily crack!) is no easier on the spring equinox than it is on any other day of the year!

Welcome back to Tuesday's Takeaways!

-Sammie King, She is Imago Dei

Do any of these quotes remind you of women you know and love? Comment below to let us know!

And now...
The term "Me Too" was coined by Tarana Burke. A survivor of sexual assault, she wanted to create a space for women and girls of color who had survived sexual violence so that they could voice their experiences.

Hey readers,
Welcome back to Tuesday's Takeaways!
  • Takeaway trivia of the week: Which city in New York tried making snow illegal?  And are snowflakes actually scientifically unique?

What images come to mind when you think of winter? Here are some Top Quotes to ponder while warm and bundled up (and maybe drinking your favorite hot cocoa or tea!)
1.
"Outside, the wind whispered softly, like a friend just passing through. The snow drifted down in lazy flakes and the trees were nests of black and white lines."
-Algonquin Jones, Something Called A Storm

2.
"Cascades of revelation
tempestuous times abound
Being freezes"
-Dante Baudelaire, Travel

3.
"They heard the cold outside, singing sweetly now, perhaps the only song existing in the world."
-Romel Martinez, The Shakespeare Pages

4.
"I notice how the ice lessens
How the snow dances beneath my feet
The gentle glow, a misting blow"
 -Melissa Louis, A Warm Winter

5.
"The world outside was pale, the earth’s crust hidden beneath a blanket of fluffy snow draped over the landscape."
-Roksana Jasiewicz, The Blizzard Lurker

6.
"It’s like hazy days; taking foggy skies with hail and sleet
presumed to bring moisture to your eyes
reveling in the abrupt storm looking anew."
-Mary Halabani, 3AM Highlights

Comment below if any of these quotes resonated with you in this blistering cold weather!
And now...
One of New York's snowiest cities, in March of 1992 the city of Syracuse's Common Council declared that any more snow before Christmas Eve was illegal. Despite their cute tactics, it snowed just days later.

As for snowflakes being unique, that was negated in 1988, when Nancy Knight, a scientist at the National Center for Atmosphere Research in Colorado, discovered two identical snowflakes that blew in during a Wisconsin storm.

Next week's theme is going to be in honor of Women's History Month.

stuck in a fairytale

Hey readers,
Welcome back to Tuesday's Takeaways!
With National Tell A Fairy Tale Day being this Thursday, we wanted to share our favorite Top Quotes on everything fantastical.
  • Takeaway trivia for this week: What is the historical background of fairy tales? And when was the term coined?

Throughout history, both oral and written, there have been legends on varying topics encompassing all facets of human emotion.

"I’m not just talking about romance here... I mean in all facets of life."

-Ahnaf Zitou, A BRIEF INQUIRY INTO THE TIME YOU BROKE YOUR OWN HEART

Fairy tales are known for mentioning monsters as a:
"Supernatural creature that walks besides the rest."

- Kathleen Conlon, vampires at dawn

And fighting them, whether they be physical or from within:
"The main character would finally master
The art of resilience and defeat that heinous creature.
The creature whom she herself has also been trying to defeat."
-le cielle, To be continued

Modern fairy tales are most known for their happy endings:
"A glistening amount of sunshine
A rainbow full of glorious colors shines
On my face
On the world
On the chaos."

-Diana Ariel Harman, THE PERFECT STORM

Fairy tales weave stories of beautiful hidden creatures:
"I seek the Angels and you the mermaids,
Who us, but men of the earth never seen but heard to be.
To be true, both mythical
Each of these beings we went out to see."

-Dc Farrell, CHAPTER 1Q: A WRITER WRITES AND A POET RECITES

Fairy tales about tragic love may start off like this:
"This is the story of a painfully beautiful love...
the countless dreams of magic they desperately wanted to create together..."

And sometimes they end painfully too...
"one last glimpse into a fairy tale past is his final prayer to comfort and warm a withering soul."
-Jerry Salem, A NOT SO SWIFT LOVE STORY

But there are also happy tales where that love is reciprocated:
"I admired King from afar
Never did I believe That King would return that admiration
The admiration I never thought could be achieved."

-Liza Rodriguez, King

And even though fairy tales might not be true:
"I think we are all just afraid of our own tales and our own dreams."

-Anya Supernova, Taking the Scenic Route

We should realize that...
"there’s a magic in the way I hold reality by the hind leg, pulling reason to a straddle."

-Quentin Felton, "read this in a quiet room"

Even Albert Einstein once said: “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales."

Comment below if you agree!
And now...

Researchers say that fairy tale stories date back thousands of years, some over 6,500 years ago. Because oral tradition passed them down from generation to generation, the history of their development is obscure and blurred, and the original tale remains unknown. Over the centuries different versions of the same folklore spread throughout the world as travelers passed through different countries.

Madame d'Aulnoy invented the French term "Conte de fée" in the late 17th century for her writings. Later, the English term "fairy tale" stemmed from the fact that the French contes often included fairies.

stuck in black history month

Hey readers,
Welcome back to Tuesday's Takeaways!

This week our Top Quotes will be interspersed throughout a larger message.
  • Takeaway Trivia of the week: Do you know why Black History Month takes place during February? And that every Black History Month has a theme? Find out why and what this year's theme is at the bottom of the post!

Black History Month is a time to, in the words of President Gerald R. Ford, “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
In doing so, we must acknowledge not only how far we have come, but how far we still have to go
because....
we are still wondering

"When will the day arrive that we can all come together and join forces?
So that we may one day concur, people are more than their skin and more than their
                                                                         religion,
We must understand that they are their hearts and souls within"
                                                                        - Zoe Christie, We All Would Win

because…
                                                    "Our generations shouldn’t be
Dodgeball where we instead dodge the bullets
                                                                        In schools
                                                                    From the police
Who only seem to shoot the innocents
The colored innocents, like Trayvon Martin and Stephon Clark
Who are now not only black or brown
                                                                But are stained in red"

                                                                   -Alyna Valderrama, #ThisIsAmerica

because...
no one should be shamed for their skin color
a
nd although there are times you may feel like this:

"I return every night to walk around in peace
When no eye can see a mile away and laugh
At the darkness of my skin that takes refuge in
The beauty of stars shining on the waters."

                                                                             -Beaton Galafa, Autumn

Just know that there will be a time when you will feel like this:

"My Blackness is far from skin deep
                                                                     It is an essence
It is a walk, a talk
                                                                     A smile, a look
                                                                It’s my fist held high

                                                                                                  [...]

My Blackness is loud and forthright
                                                      My beauty, unfair and lovely
My Blackness is far from skin deep
                                                                It is my everything.
"
-Nya Archie, MY BLACKNESS IS FAR FROM SKIN DEEP

And as we celebrate this Black History Month, we will keep in mind that everyone must be guaranteed the ability and access to thrive, and that the fight to change the twisted course of history will not be over until then.

Comment below to let us know what you think of these quotes!

And now...

The reason Black History Month takes place in February is because it was originally a week-long celebration to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass (February 14) and Abraham Lincoln (February 12). However, its founder, historian Carter G. Woodson also had this month in mind because of other important events that are important to Black history, such as the passing of the 15th amendment (February 3), granting black citizens the right to vote, the founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) (February 12), and the birthday of W. E. B. DuBois (February 23).
This year, the theme of Black History Month is migration.

Next week's theme is going to be about fairy tales!

In the meantime, here are our Top 5 Quotes in the search for love!
1. For those of you whose love is in this moment:
"Tell me, tell me how you love me,
tell me how to fall
in the seconds
in the spaces
not a breath or a moment wasted
in the quiet, quiet morning
of our curving, endless
shrine."
-Sophie Shnaidman, In This Moment

2. For those of you who are in need of some self love:
"Monday morning, and I'm thinking about the flowers that grow on my windowsills,
how somebody told me that my basil plant would not grow but now it has, all because I loved it-
that the basil plant now grows on my windowsill, as well as in my heart."

-Maya Garcia, The Lung Flowers

3. For those of you whose love is unconditional:
"I love your storms
Just as much as I love your sunshine.
I love you when you're withered
Just as much as I love you when you're blooming.
So come to me in any condition
because the love I have for you has none."

-Samantha Merzel, Unconditional Love

4. For those of you who had to say goodbye this year to someone you love:

your taste lingers,
on our lips
in our noses
and stains the lines of our hands."

-Joshua Avin, My Dad and Modest Mouse

5. For those of you celebrating the love of friendship:

it becomes intangible.
The other by your side
at all times."
